Thankfully, this past week has been pretty uneventful. He couldn’t keep pace with the feeding plan the doctors put in place. As a result, a Nasogastric feeding tube (NG Tube) was inserted so that he could get the nutrition to gain weight, and the volume of fluid necessary to maintain hydration and kidney function. William’s labs have indicated that his electrolytes have been stable throughout the week. This is a big milestone he had to meet in order to get out of the NICU.

Now, with his kidney function known, he needs to begin to take all of his prescribed feeds by mouth in order to go home. Last week, we asked you to pray that William would take 60-70 mL by mouth in order to go home. He didn’t make a lot of progress, so the doctors want us to continue to push William this week to see if he makes progress by Thursday or Friday. If he doesn’t we will have several decisions to make this week regarding William’s discharge. The most critical is how we will give William supplemental feeds.

If William doesn’t eat enough, we will have two choices. The first choice is a short term option, take William home with with his current NG tube in place. This option is very short term (less than a month). We would continue to feed whatever he hasn’t eaten, during his current feeding, through his NG in order to meet his daily volume goals. The second option is longer term, we would transfer William to Children’s Hospital to have a Gastrostomy tube (G Tube) put in. A G tube is a feeding tube that is inserted surgically through the abdomen directly into the stomach. This will allow us to provide him with the volume of food that he needs, and administer any medication or nutritional supplements that he may need in the future.

Prayer Requests:

  • That we and the doctors would make wise decisions this week.
  • William’s kidneys would continue to regulate his electrolytes and urine output.
  • William would begin to take at least 60 mL by mouth this week.
  • Kaylee and I would work together as I go back to work this week.

We would like to thank all of you for your prayers, and your generosity during these past few weeks. We feel truly blessed to have so many people supporting us.
